Biomat

While the “geosynthetics” industry originated with synthetics in the form of fibres, sheets and extrusions, an off-shoot of this family surfaced in recent years – natural fibres. These are biodegradable coconut and palm fibres. Products using these natural fibres are typically “biomats”. Emas Kiara has three different types of Biomat system namely Green-TRM (100% geosynthetic), C-TRM (coir–turf reinforcement mat) and Eco-Biomats. The emphasis on having aesthetic finishes within geosynthetic solutions gave rise to the use of natural fabrics. These are the natural fibres assembled and spread into a mat-form with the aid of synthetic light-weight netting over and beneath the mat. So today, Emas Kiara Group also offers a range of bio-products with a varied set of specifications to meet the requirements of challenging applications.

C-TRM (Coir-Turf Reinforcement Mat) This consists of a three-dimension web of polypropylene netting layered with either coir or oil palm fibres are positioned and sandwiched between a bottom netting and a heavy, crimped, intermediate net which is overlaid with a heavy top netting. All these are mechanically bound together by stitching to form a unique triple netting matrix system. Similarly, Green-TRM is just manufactured in the same manner as C-TRM except that the fibre is 100% geosynthetic and it is green in colour. This flexible three-dimensional matrix retains seeds and soil, stimulates seed germination and assists the plants roots to be developed and integrated into a mesh system to prevent soil being eroded away by surface runoff water. Eco-Biomat is differs slightly. It consists of natural fibres that is biodegradable coir or palm fibres, stitched together with lightweight reinforcing polymer mesh to form a flexible but strong knitted bio-engineered mat. Biomats are applicable and cost effective to protect and to control erosion in river banks, channels, sway and ditch slopes, landscaping, highway and railway verges, medians, embankment slopes, spillways, reservoirs, pond and lagoon slopes and golf courses. It assists to re-vegetate newly cut and fill slopes, channels, rivers and wetlands and to prevent surface erosion of slopes.
